Chunk! No, Captain Chunk have released the title track off their upcoming record ‘Gone Are The Good Days’, and it is the happy song we all could use right now. The band’s joyous and carefree sound are perfect for the first summer post-lockdown. The song is about how the good old days have passed by, but it is important to care them with you and look back fondly. Everything has changed since the covid-19 pandemic, but that is okay. It is time for a new chapter, and Chunk is here to help ring it in. If there was ever a time for Chunk! No, Captain Chunk to make a comeback, it is now. Fortunately the band are coming out the gate strong, as their first single ‘Bitter’ is an absolute easycore banger. Gone Are The Good Days is more mellow than its predecessor, but it is the perfect song for a June bloom.

Bertrand previously stated that this record would be a coalescence of all three of their previous albums. Judging by Blame It On This Song, Bitter, and now Gone Are The Good Days, it is easy to tell that this is the case. During an AMA on Reddit, vocalist Bertrand Poncet said “the new album has the tone of Pardon My French with the vibe of Something for Nothing combined with the experience and the maturity of Get Lost Find Yourself. All those things combined into one”. I imagine there will be something for everything on their upcoming album. Additionally, it seems that the band is adding the maturity from previous album Get Lost Find Yourself and applying it even to the tracks that are fun and heavy (speaking of heavy, Poncet also revealed that the heaviest track on the album is called “True Colors” so stay tuned for that one!). This is Chunk! No, Captain Chunk all grown up and at their best, and we are here for it.

The video matches the tone of the song very well. Starting off with none other than Toy Story’s heroic cowboy, Woody, swinging into action with a cassette tape full of memories. This is something I can imagine Woody pulling on his human friend, Andy. The music video features a couple reminiscing over the good old days and playing Sega Genesis (I imagine some readers might not even remember the classic console). This song hits extra hard after the quarantine period. Ironically enough, the song was written before covid-19 even happened. The French band is glad however that the track can have a whole new meaning for fans to connect with.

Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! are back! The band haven’t released an album since 2015’s ‘Get Lost, Find Yourself’. This wasn’t the last time we heard from the French easycore band. After playing Warped Tour 2016, the band released the swinging summer song ‘Blame It On This Song’. Fans were excited to get more Chunk so soon, but little did they know it would be the last taste for half a decade. Now the band has returned, releasing their latest single ‘Bitter’ and announcing their comeback album ‘Gone Are The Good Old Days‘. The album title sounds bleakly out of character for the band, but I am confident that the band will prove the good old days haven’t passed by yet. After five years one might expect a major change from the band. Perhaps even a change for the worse. Has Chunk! No, Captain Chunk retained everything that made them fun?

The Comeback Single ‘Bitter’

The band chose the song ‘Bitter’ off their upcoming album as their comeback single. Chunk did it right with this one. The song just screams “comeback” single. The song starts off with a bouncy and fun easycore riff, which should immediately lay to rest any concerns regarding the band’s return.

Not that there was ever a problem with the singers prominent and distinct accent, but this will likely do wonders for the bands accessibility across seas. The chorus is fun and catchy. Listeners will sing along confidently by the second time the chorus comes around.

After the first chorus a surprising breakdown hits full force. Very similar to the style of ‘The Other Line’, but I am not complaining at all. The track was a fan favorite off of their latest album ‘Get Lost, Find Yourself’. The breakdown is welcoming, as it proves that the band is sticking true to their beloved easycore roots. After five years the band proves that there was never any reason for anyone to have doubts. Chunk, No Captain Chunk! have returned as the same band that left, but perhaps even better than ever.

What Awaits Us With ‘Gone Are The Good Old Days’?

The album is freshly announced, so information is limited. What we do know is that the five year old post-Warped Tour single ‘Blame It On This Song’ is featured on the album. It is not known whether this is a re-recording, or if the band just felt that the song fit on the album and wanted to give it a slot. I doubt anyone will have a complaint about this decision, as the song likely slipped under the cracks after its original release. The song is a fun and swinging summer track that will hopefully fit perfectly within the album. Judging by ‘Bitter’ this theory holds some weight.
