Volumes Happier? Reaction | Metal Shell Reacts

Get a picture because Volumes are right back at it again. “Happier?” is the band’s first album in four years, so the pressure was on with this one. Adding to this pressure was a major line-up change. The band continued on without their long-time vocalist Gus Farias, but fortunately the band recruited fan-favorite former vocalist Michael Barr. With Michael now splitting vocal duties with Myke Terry, fans were excited to hear this new version of the band. This wasn’t the only change the band experienced however, as long-time Guitarist Diego Farias also left the band. Diego unfortunately passed away shortly after – rest in peace – so the Volumes camp have been through a lot the last few years.

What does all of this mean for the sound of the band though? Does the band manage to surpass expectations and rise above these changes and challenges? I will be discussing the album in-full in my upcoming Volumes Happier? track-by-track album review, so for now I will let my initial reaction speak for itself. I have never been a huge fan of the band, but I dove into their new record with an open mind and open ears. Metal Shell Reacts to Volumes | Happier? Full Album

“Happier” is easily one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. I will admit that the record was hardly on my radar before this reaction. While I previously enjoyed the pre-album announcement single “Weightless”, I initially wasn’t as impressed with the following singles. However, not only do I enjoy the full album immensely, but even the singles standout better in the context of the record. This may just be the best “Volumes” record ever. I think the band did a great job overcoming their line-up change, the pandemic and lockdown, and the difficulties in their individual personal lives. The duo of Michael and Myke are exciting and the instrumentals sound as good as ever. I hope this version of the band sticks around for a long time. “Happier” not only surpasses all expectations, but it sets the bar high for anything that comes next.

What Did I Like About Happier??

Upon initially hearing the album I was most impressed with the bouncy and groovy instrumentals – which is a standard for Volumes – and the vocal duo of Michael Barr and Myke Terry. While their previous record “Different Animals” didn’t completely lack that djent sound fans love, it didn’t lean into it nearly enough. “Happier?” here does the complete opposite. The record is far more progressive and features plenty of technical riffs and breakdowns. Throughout the record, the band juggle brutal headbang worthy breakdowns, beautiful and peaceful bridges, and powerful choruses. I must say they really nail it all too. “Happier” has an ambiance that puts the band in a league of their own.

As you can tell from my Volumes Happier? reaction video posted above, I did enjoy my first date with the record. So far my favorite tracks are “RBX”, “Into You (Hurt)”, “Bend”, “Man On Fire”, and “Weighted”. Only time will tell what tracks stick with me though.

Bullet For My Valentine go back to their roots in their new album “Bullet For My Valentine”. The self-titled album features more screaming and growling than anything the band has offered their audience in over 10 years. However, does this equivalate to the album being a quality release overall? I discuss the album in-full in my Bullet For My Valentine self-titled track-by-track album review, but within the current article I share my initial reaction to hearing the record for the first time. Initially I knew that the lead single was heavy, but I did not know if the album would keep this energy going. Metal Shell Reacts to Bullet For My Valentine – Self-Titled Album

For the most part I am quite impressed with the album! Its thrashy, heavy, and in your face nearly start-to-finish. I thought that the band that created “The Poison” and “Scream Aim Fire” was gone. Well the appropriately self-titled album proves this assumption false. While I don’t think the album stands up against these massive early career records by the band, I think it is a worthy record in its own right.

“Bullet For My Valentine” is vocally and instrumentally impressive, with catchy choruses and breakdowns galore. Several of the tracks have been stuck in my head since I first heard the record, and that is impressive for an album so genuinely heavy. At the very least, this album is a straightforward headbanger that will leave you with a massive “bangover”. As you can tell from my Bullet For My Valentine self-titled reaction video posted above, I did enjoy my first date with the record. So far my favorite tracks are “Parasite”, “No Happy Ever After”, “Paralysed”, and “Death By A Thousand Cuts”. Only time will tell what tracks stick with me though.

Spiritbox Tap Into The Nu-Metal Sound With New Single ‘Hurt You’

Spiritbox are getting close to releasing one of the – if not the most – hyped up albums of 2021. The Canadian band’s debut album “Eternal Blue” comes out September 17th, 2021, and they have blessed us with one more single while we wait. Their new track “Hurt You” follows the band’s trend of experimenting with new sounds with each single released. The “Blessed Be” band has showcased a wonderful display of diversity within the record with fully heavy tracks with only screaming vocals, to beautiful progressive tracks that push the boundaries of the metalcore genre.

“Hurt You” is another heavy track that sounds like their tracks “Holy Roller” and “Circle With Me” had a baby and raised it on nu-metal. The distorted undertones throughout the song have a creepy and eerie vibe to it only found in the more darker, industrial side of the nu-metal genre. Following the last couple of tracks featured a more tame and eloquent sound, I didn’t expect “Hurt You” to be so dark. As a big fan of diverse records, I am totally on board with this. Spiritbox are shaping up to have one of the most diverse records the scene has ever seen.

A Darker Sound For Spiritbox

Hurt You – Spiritbox

Spiritbox manage to release a fifth single off of their upcoming album “Eternal Blue” and still have yet to repeat a sound more than once. The band are not redundant in the slightest, and I have faith that the full album will prove the same. By utilizing a darker atmosphere and sound, the band is able to create a song with a similar structure to “Circle With Me”, while maintaining its own identity. The band also swaps the clean verses of the previous mentioned track with screamed verses. I like to think of “Hurt You” as the duality to “Circle With Me”. Both are absolute bangers with breakdowns to match, but convey completely different attitudes and messages. With a name like “Hurt You”, I was anticipating a heavier track, and fortunately I got my wish.

The “Hurt You” Music Video

The music video gives me strong “Resident Evil: Revelations” vibes. An invasive zombie creature haunts what I assume are troubled lovers within a hotel (or crewship?). While Spiritbox are no strangers to creepy music videos – Holy Roller still shocks me when it pops up unexpectedly – I did not expect another disturbing video so soon. It made for some great visuals and a unique music video though, that’s for sure! I thoroughly enjoyed the video, and I believe this is one of those circumstances where a video complements and adds to the track. I will now forever see the zombie creature in my mind whenever I hear “Hurt You”. Thank you Spiritbox for haunting my dreams!

With some help from Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante, Crown The Empire triumphantly return to the heavy metalcore sound of their past with “In Another Life”. However, a return to heavy music isn’t the only noteworthy aspect of their new track. What the song does best is that it knows how to utilize a guest feature. This is exactly what the metalcore scene so desperately needs right now.

Crown The Empire Return To Their Roots

In Another Life (feat. Courtney LaPlante) – Crown The Empire

If you missed the old Crown The Empire of the past, you’re in luck! The band are back to making straight-to-the-point metalcore. Plenty of bands popular in the 10’s are returning to a heavy sound. These bands include the likes of Memphis May Fire, We Came As Romans, Underoath, and more. In the 20’s heavy is the way to go, and Crown The Empire are 100% onboard with this. In “In Another Life”, Bassist Hayden Tree takes on far more screaming vocals than ever before. This allows the band to take on the sound of their past, while differentiating at the same time.

Their last record “Sudden Sky” wasn’t bad by any means, but I would be lying if I said the sound of “In Another Life” wasn’t much more exciting. The energetic and heavy side of Crown The Empire actually adds to their uniqueness and defines their place in the scene. Mixing theatrical Panic! At The Disco-esque vocals with the crushing sounds of metalcore from the 10’s is where the band shines best.

Will the album be heavy as well?

Despite my praise of the track, I do not expect – nor do I need – the band to stay this heavy throughout the whole record. I think diverse records are the best records. The issue with “Sudden Sky” wasn’t that the lead singles were missing screams, it was that most songs were missing screams. When an album has 10-13 tracks there is plenty of room for heavy, soft, and experimental tracks. I actually really enjoyed the singles leading up to the last record. The catchy “20/20” and the energetic “what i am” were great tracks that worked great despite lacking screams (and previous vocalist David Escamilla). Whether the upcoming record is full of tracks like “In Another Life” or not, I still see this as a promising start.

Crown The Empire Showing How Features Are Done

Let’s discuss how well Courtney LaPlante’s feature is done in this track. In a genre saturated by incredibly short, underwhelming, and underused features, this track proves exactly how they should be done. Courtney gets to show off her singing and screaming talents in multiple different moments of the track. Spiritbox are one of the hottest bands right now, and they are definitely going to be a leading band for this generation of the metalcore genre. By recruiting Courtney, Crown The Empire are able prove that they are going to be relevant this generation as well.

Spiritbox are releasing their debut record “Eternal Blue” September 17th. To think they don’t even have an album out, yet they have completely taken over the scene. The band was even touring with Limp Bizkit! Unfortunately the tour was canceled, but don’t worry, this is only the beginning for Spiritbox.

Motionless In White Timebomb

Motionless In White Explode With Heavy Standalone Single ‘Timebomb’

Following two short days of teasing, Motionless In White explode onto the scene with their “heavy as fuck” standalone single “Timebomb”. The track was highly-anticipated by fans – such as myself – and we were not disappointed. The track features both rapid riffage and low-tuned chugs, giving every fan of heavy music something to headbang to. The song shows Motionless In White venture into a whole new avenue of sound for the band. The “Disguise” band forgoes the horror and gothic vibes for a more confident and hopeful song with a modern metalcore style. “Timebomb” is more inline with the encouraging “570” than most of the band’s heavier tracks such as “Soft” or recent single “Thoughts & Prayers“.

Despite the track being incredibly different from most of their material, the song was met with much praise from the fanbase. Some thought the track sounds like nothing the band has ever tried before, while others made comparisons to the heavier tracks found on the band’s sophomore record “Infamous”. I previously made the connection to the band’s track “570” and I also think it follows the sound of previous single “Creatures X: From Beyond The Grave” as well. The Timebomb Visualizer Video

Timebomb – Motionless In White

While “Timebomb” did not receive a traditional music video with footage of the band, it did get an exciting visualizer video. The suspenseful video was directed and created by OhrangeCo (Logan Beaver). The band’s own Ricky Olson contributed with the editing and coloring of the video, and additional footage was supplied by Tiltshift Visual and my old pal Gabor Toth. I think the video is great and it does a great job at conveying the tone of the track. The talented team was able to put together a unique and worthy music video despite ignoring the conventional trends of the genre. This is impressive in its own right, and it’s nice seeing Ricky assist in the production of another music video.

Timebomb Is An Absolute Banger

“Timebomb” is the definition of a banger. The track comes in quick, hits hard, and has an additive chorus to match. The track had a ton of hype to live up to, and it is safe to say it blew those expectations out of the water. The song is a wild ride that never stops, and it even features a full breakdown and a heavy outro. The pre-chorus and second chorus features more of the fan-favorite singing of Ricky Olson. Additionally, the song showcases one of Chris Motionless’ most expressive and flexible performance to date.

“Timebomb” is the perfect song to feature more of Ricky’s singing. With some assistance with the singing, the track will sound huge during a live performance. Fortunately, the band is going on tour next month, so the track released at the perfect time. I am confident the crowd will be rowdy when Timebomb goes off.

The Bridge Between The Quarantine Experiments And The 2022 Album

Shockingly enough, while Timebomb is one of the best metalcore tracks of 2021, it will not be on the upcoming Motionless In White album. In a video, Chris Motionless explained that the song was released to hold fans over until the new album releases in early 2022. The purpose of the track is to bridge the end of the 2020 Quarantine Experiments and the release of this upcoming record.

Motionless In White Ditch The Black For Neon With ‘Voices: Synthwave Edition’

While “Timebomb” may not represent the upcoming record, it is a certified banger that is sure to have its own place within the band’s discography. I find this refreshing, as the band is maintaining a consistent stream of content even between records. 2019 had Disguise, 2020 had the 2020 Quarantine Experiments and Creatures X, 2021 has “Timebomb”, and 2022 will house a brand new full-length record. Not to mention the band put on -not one – but two livestreams within the last two years. Motionless In White fans may just be the luckiest fans in the world.

Tallah: ‘Vanilla Paste’ Is The Bohemian Rhapsody Of Nu-Metal

Tallah just unleashed the Bohemian Rhapsody of Nu-metal. No joke! The strangely named “Vanilla Paste“ is a dynamic track that has it all. The track is a six and a half minute theatrical nucore banger that never lets up. I never knew I wanted a nu-metal broadway play – okay maybe I did – but now I really want one. Can Tallah headline the nucore on broadway tour please? The theatrical elements of the track blends perfectly with the Disney villain attitude of the heavier portions of the track. “Vanilla Paste” shows Tallah at their most defined.

If you aren’t familiar with Tallah, you should change that. The band is relatively new, forming in 2018 and releasing their debut album “Matriphagy” in October of 2020. You read that right, the band only just released a full-length concept album 10 months ago, yet here we are with another crushing single. The band started work on “Vanilla Paste” back in April of this year. It seems that the band is just as energetic in their work ethic as they are in their music. Vanilla Paste: The Bohemian Rhapsody Of Nu-Metal

Tallah Band

Tallah took everything that made their debut album “Matriphagy” great, and set it to 1000. The song contains a theatrical chorus like the one in “Red Light”, the rap style screamed verses of “Overconfidence”, and the low growled, low tuned breakdown of “We, The Sad”. It is like the band captured everything that makes them special in a bottle, shook it up, left it out in a storm, let lightening strike twice, and then unleashed it into the world. A theatrical beatdown of a track. Fans have (jokingly?) compared the song to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, and I am totally on-board. “Vanilla Paste” is incredibly dynamic and has a lot to offer. The best part is, the track is still full of many surprises.

Guest Vocalists Are A First For Tallah

When Justin Bonitz is the vocalist of your band, you don’t need anyone else. Right? Wrong! Well, kind of wrong. Surely the band doesn’t “need” anyone else, but they will take it! I am often on record speaking about how the metal scene is incredibly lacking in exciting features. There are plenty of occasional (but often uneventful) guest appearances in metal, but rarely is it the big deal it is in other genres. I find this exceptionally interesting because metal is founded in ideologies that should embrace fun and creative collaborations. Heck, it is extra surprising because so many bands routinely tour together and can share a fanbase, yet still the collaborations never come.

Tallah Vanilla Paste

Anyways, enough of the mini-rant, I am just so excited to see Tallah not only utilize three guest vocalists, but they do it in a surprising and interesting manner. I was shocked to see that the track had features on it. There was no previous indication that this would be the case, and this allowed it to remain a true surprise. The track features Garrett Hood of Guerrilla Warfare, AJ Channer of Fire From The Gods, and Tom Barber of Chelsea Grin and Darko. Typically this would be a bit overkill, but fortunately the track is a whopping six and a half minutes long, so there is still plenty of Justin to go around.

Everyone Has A Part To Play

Each guest vocalist gets a significant portion of the song to go-off on. Garrett raps after the first chorus, AJ gets to scream and sing after the second chorus, and Tom ends the track with yet another crushing breakdown. I love how even if you remove the guest vocalists, the track still has two verse, three rounds of the chorus, and a breakdown completely fulfilled by Justin. Can six and a half minute tracks become the new norm? The best part is that the track is so dynamic it flies by quick. I can’t wait to hear how Tallah tops this one.

Tallah’s Disturbingly On-Brand ‘Vanilla Paste’ Music Video

Vanilla Paste – Tallah

The music video for “Vanilla Paste” is exactly what you would expect from Tallah – in fact the music video is exactly what you would expect from a track called “Vanilla Paste” – The band sit inside a dim cabin smearing what I can only assume is vanilla paste all over themselves. The band all put on their best disturbed and brain-fried faces and mindlessly gorge themselves. I haven’t digested the lyrical content yet, but I am sure their is an interesting story here.

The video is very on-brand and still contains the creepy vibes the band is known for. The found-footage type footage is still here, but it is a bit more subtle this time around. The music video features clear shots of the band, especially frontman Justin Bonitz, who occassionally is filmed in a lit sci-fi looking room. However, this clear footage is often interrupted with disturbing imagery of flies, maggots, and well… vanilla paste of course. I am a huge fan of Tallah’s music videos and this one is no different. I was captivated start to finish. You know a band is something special when both their sound, style, and actions have you hooked.
