Skyler Acord White Lace

Skyler Acord And Jenna McDougall Collab In Stunning ‘White Lace’

Coming off the recent announcement of farewell shows for his iconic band “Issues”, Skyler Acord is here with a brand new track “White Lace“. The new track follows Skyler’s fantastic debut EP, “True Viridian”.

This time Skyler has recruited Jenna McDougall to lend her vocals to the track, marking the first feature in a Skyler Acord solo song. White Lace is the first single in the new era potentially titled “True Vanity“. If this is a taste of what is to come, we are truly in for a treat.
 
Things have been busy in the world of Skyler Acord, but this is great news for myself and other eager fans. Let’s jump on in and discuss the latest release from our favorite new solo act.

White Lace – Skyler Acord (Feat. Jenna McDougall)

“White Lace” is possibly the most passionate song by Skyler Acord to date. The track keeps all the funky goodness you’d expect from the bassist of Issues and writer/performer of “made of”, but with the gothic (yet also romantic) flare found in other tracks such as the dramatic “Not Worth Saving” from “True Viridian”. 

Skyler’s vocals sound better than ever in White Lace, seemingly setting the bar higher with every release. Fans of dreamy 80’s tunes are going to love this one.

The lovely vocals of Jenna McDougall add a dynamic to the track that fits so well, that it feels like it was made for her (because it was!). Skyler previously revealed that he had Jenna in mind for the track all the way back when he first wrote it years ago.
 
The track finishes up with an infectious rhythm section that is sure to get you moving and grooving. This is exactly the type of track I needed to hear from Skyler, and I can’t wait to see what comes next. Consider me sold on goth n b if I wasn’t already (I was).

Python Sleep Token Reference

Random: Python Patch Notes Reference Sleep Token Songs

Sleep Token have become a huge band throughout 2023, gaining over a million monthly listeners on Spotify, but even this one surprised me. I knew Sleep Token were big, but I didn’t know that they were “mentioned in Python patch notes” big.

That’s right, the latest Python patch notes for version 3.12 mention Sleep Token songs within their examples. 

An eagle-eyed fan noticed the Sleep Token reference in the Python patch notes and originally shared the finding in the Sleep Token Fan Group on Facebook.

The examples for changes regarding f-string expressions in the 3.12 update for Python use Sleep Token song titles. The examples go over using multi-line expressions and comments within code to create a playlist with Python.

Here is a clear screenshot of the Sleep Token references below:

The examples mention “Take Me Back To Eden“, “Alkaline“, and “Ascensionism“, all of which are fan-favorite Sleep Token tracks.

Additionally, in the second example, there are lyrical references, confirming that these are indeed references specifically to the Sleep Token songs in question.

As a fan of Sleep Token and a user of Python, this was a shocking, but pleasant, surprise to say the least.

Best Metal Albums Of 2022 Ranked: Top 10 Albums Of The Year

Hello everyone! Wayne here and as 2023 kicks off to a great start, I want to back up and go over my personal list of the top 10 best metal albums of 2022.

I will be going down the list in ranked order, but I want to emphasis that this is just a personal list that is even subject to change with time.

Additionally, I will be using the definition of “metal” very loosely throughout this post. Many albums on this list fit more within the realms of post-hardcore, metalcore, and alternative. However, entries on this list will feature elements of metal.

Just consider this list the best albums of 2022 according to metalshell.net. Now let’s jump on in and get into the list. Here are the best metal albums of 2022, ranked.

#10 – In Stasis (Monuments)

Genre: Progressive Metal, Djent

I had been anticipating a full album from Monuments with Andy Cizek ever since he was announced to join the band. While singles like “Animus” showed the potential, an album would be the true test. 

Fortunately after a long wait, the full album “In Stasis” was released, and it lived up to the hype.

The album was co-produced by George Lever (Sleep Token, Loathe, Thornhill) and Mick Gordan of Doom fame. Mick is even specifically mentioned as a feature on the singles, “Cardinal Red” and “False Providence“, but this is likely just for marketing reasons.

Monuments has always been a standout band instrumentally, but now with Andy Cizek as vocalist, the band have reached a new prime.

In Stasis is wildly heavy and groovy, all while still having catchy and well-performed choruses by Andy. This partnership strikes a balance between heavy and melodic masterfully in a way similar to 2015’s “Matriarch” by Veil of Maya.

I love progressive metal with a strong balance of heavy and melodic, all while developing an atmosphere that surrounds their sound, so I find “In Stasis” to live up to the hype.

Highlights of In Stasis

While the album has nothing but great songs, the singles “Lavos“, “Cardinal Red“, and “False Providence” are great highlights that give a peek into the sound of the overall record.

However, the melodic – yet still wildly heavy – “Makeshift Chemistry” is easily one of my favorite tracks on the album as well. Additionally, “The Cimmerian” is a fantastic closing epic that adds a unique flavor to close the album out on.

“In Stasis” is a cohesive album with little diversity, but Monuments are surely doing what they do best here, so this isn’t a compliant.

The record in entirety keep up the energy and formula presented by these well-picked singles, so if you like them you’re in for a treat.

All-in-all, “In Stasis” is a great album that was entirely worth the wait, and I find it to be one of the best metal albums of 2022.

#9 – Remember That You Will Die (Polyphia)

Polyphia have been a huge sensation for awhile now, but there has never been more hype surrounding the band than during the build up to their latest album “Remember That You Will Die”.

The band’s fourth album was a huge success, peaking at number 33 on the billboard top 200 and even landing number 1 on the Hard Rock charts.

While Polyphia have been growing inside the metal and rock scene, they have also been progressively breaking out of the boundaries of the scene, finding mainstream success and hype amongst the general population.

This genre-bending mindset shows with “Remember That You Will Die” more than it ever has, as Polyphia play by absolutely no rules on this album (as if they ever did).

The album contains some of the strangest features you can imagine. From the pop artists Sophia Black, to the rapper Lil West, all the way to nu-metal hero Chino Moreno, there are tons of interesting appearances on this record.

I find these unconventional decisions and the pop and hip-hop influences on the album to be exactly what makes “Remember That You Will Die” stand out. While the album may not have made it deep down into my top 10 albums of 2022 list, it certainly deserves to make an appearance.

Highlights of Remember That You Will Die

Despite the experimentation being unique and well-done throughout “Remember That You Will Die“, some of the best moments on this album come when Polyphia is just doing their thing.

The lead single “Playing God” made huge waves upon release, and even after all this time, the smooth track is still one of the highest highs on the record.

“The Audacity” and “Reverie” are two other tracks that standout to me. While both songs have no features or vocals, Polyphia have mastered their formula, and it shows here.

Additionally, I am borderline addicted to Bloodbath (feat. Chino Moreno). The track takes exactly what makes Chino an icon and runs with it. The sexy and airy track is catchy, heavy, and experimental and it all pays off.

Overall “Remember That You Will Die” is a example of a band reaching new heights and mastering their formula, all while still experimenting with new sounds, features, and influences in the process.

#8 – Welcome Home (VRSTY)

Genre: Soul punk, Heavy pop, Alternative Metal, Rnb

VRSTY have been on my radar for a long time, going back all the way to before the 2015 “Lights”  EP and vocalists Joey Varela’s metalcore cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”. 

I even featured the band in my 2021 article, The Next Generation: 10 Bands You Need To Know About.

The band’s growth has been enormous, going from an underrated fan-favorite to an Sirius XM Octane radio star and Shiprocked Cruise act in the blink of an eye.

This growth was in response to the band’s fantastic EP “Cloud City“, which featured the huge singles “Shameless” and “Massive“. Cloud City was also VRSTY’s debut release under Spinefarm Records.

All of this hard work and growth led to the release of the debut VRSTY album “Welcome Home” in January of 2022. The album was one of the earliest, and best releases of the year. 

With huge hooks, soaring r&b soul, and just enough heavy groove to pack a punch, Welcome Home is a fantastic debut album that sets the tone for VRSTY and their sprouting career.

While this sound and style is becoming progressively more popular, VRSTY are pioneers of this sound, and rarely does a band do it as well as they do.

Welcome Home Pt. 2 & Welcome Home Pt. 3

One of the most interesting things about VRSTY and the Welcome Home era is that the band have been supplementing the album cycle with additional versions that add to the established catalog of tracks.

Welcome Home Pt. 2 included latin versions of the “Cloud City” track “Dig“, and Welcome Home Pt. 1 tracks “Closer” and “Sick“. These latin versions are fantastic, and have me wanting more. Perhaps the band will experiment with bi-lingual lyrics with future tracks.

Welcome Home Pt. 3 adds three of of the band’s best songs to date. This closes out the “Welcome Home” era with a bang. If this is where VRSTY is going, then I am more excited for their future than ever.

Highlights of Welcome Home

The whole album is fantastic start to finish, but the four song run at the start is especially great.

Highlight tracks from Welcome Home include the rowdy opener “Finesse” featuring Notions, the appropriately-titled r&b banger “Soul“, and the sensual “Closer“.

Additionally, Welcome Home Pt.2 and Welcome Home Pt. 3 are fantastic additions to the album cycle.

VRSTY consistently continue to climb and get better and better with each release. This is exactly why Welcome Home is one of the best metal albums of 2022. I look forward to whatever comes next for the band.

#7 – Rain City Drive (Rain City Drive)

Genre: Post Hardcore, Alternative, Heavy Pop, Rnb

Rain City Drive (formerly Slaves) put out their self-titled album “Rain City Drive” in 2022. The self-titled album is the first album published under the new band name, and second album featuring their new vocalist Matt McAndrew.

With all these huge changes, Rain City Drive had a lot to prove. Following up their previous album “To Better Days“, would be difficult, as the album featured huge, well-written tracks that seemed to be too big to top.

Fortunately, this re-invention of the band worked out fantastically, as Rain City Drive debuted their new chapter by putting out one of the best albums of 2022.

The Rain City Drive self-titled album not only has some of the catchiest and best tracks of their career, but the full album is great. There is something to appreciate about every song on the album. Honestly, it may even be a tighter album than “To Better Days“.

The instrumentation throughout the record is surprisingly heavy at times, and Rain City Drive pull it off so well. I am a sucker for bands that have that r&b vibe with groovy riffs, so this album scratches that itch for me.

If you also like music with this style, you’re going to love this album.

Highlights of Rain City Drive Self-Titled

The Rain City Drive self-titled album is tight and cohesive, so I recommend checking out the whole album.

However, the singles “Waiting on You“, “Cutting It Close“, and “Blood Runs Cold” are fantastic and have a heavier edge to them. These tracks represent the album well.

The fantastic vocal performance by Matt McAndrew are a perfect match for Rain City Drive, and the crunchy instrumentals adds a punch the poppy sensibilities in his voice.

Rain City Drive self-titled is a surprising step up from even their last fantastic album “To Better Days“. This growth has earned the band a spot on the list of top 10 metal albums of 2022.

#6 – Rouge Carpet Disaster (Static Dress)

Genre: Post Hardcore, Alternative Metal, Metalcore, Emo

Static Dress hit the scene like a freight train. Once minute I was recommended them due to my love for the band Loathe. Next thing I knew, the band put out one of the best albums of the year.

“Rouge Carpet Disaster” is a follow up to the previous year’s “Prologue” that appropriately acted as a prologue to the band’s debut album.

One would think that putting out so much music so quickly could negatively impact the quality of the music being put out, but fortunately this isn’t the case at all when it comes to Static Dress. The band are impressive as they are busy and productive. 

“Rouge Carpet Disaster” is not only a fantastic and promising debut record, but it also lives up to the high standards set by the band’s previous works, and expands on their established sound.

Throughout the record, Static Dress display a sound that features the addictive and catchy choruses of early 2000’s emo (All-American Rejects, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday), and the crunchy and seductive heaviness of nu-gaze (Deftones and LOATHE).

I find this sound to be really enjoyable, and I can’t get enough of new bands that are playing around with these influences.

The Highlights of Rouge Carpet Disaster

I find the highlights of Rouge Carpet Disaster to be the songs that bring the energy while also delivering catchy and memorable choruses.

Songs like “fleahouse“, “sweet“, “Push rope“, “such.a.shame“, and “…Maybe!!?” are exactly what I crave from Static Dress.

These tracks showcase the band balance raw heaviness and harsh vocals with catchy and well-written melodies that remind me of the glory years of early 2000’s emo and alternative.

I really appreciate how Static Dress don’t really do the typical heavy verse – soft chorus formula. The band just do what they are going to do when they want to do it an I enjoy them that much more for it.

However, the whole album is great and you can’t really go wrong with any of the material on this record. Rogue Carpet Disaster is still on repeat for me into 2023, the record is a fantastic addiction to my top 10 albums of 2022 list.

#5 – The Generation Of Danger (Tallah)

Genre: Nu Core, Nu Metal, Metalcore, Alternative Metal, Beatdown

Tallah isn’t just one of the fastest-growing and hottest bands in heavy music right now, they also put out one of my absolute favorite albums of 2020, “Matriphagy“.

They are another band that were featured the band in my 2021 article, The Next Generation: 10 Bands You Need To Know About.

The wild nu-core outlet are back again with “The Generation Of Danger“; another balls-to-the-wall heavy record that is almost too chaotic to function.

Like “Matriphagy” before it, “The Generation Of Danger” is a concept album that tells a unique story written by vocalist Justin Bonitz. However, the structure of the story is different this time around. 

The “Generation Of Danger” was written in an interchangeable order, and the album order is simply what the band decided to go with musically.

For the story, the tracklist is done in a “pick your own adventure” style. Meaning certain tracks are interchangeable and can be heard in any order. Fortunately, Justin Bonitz put out a video going over the story of The Generation Of Danger.

This unique approach to story-telling was done to allow for flexibility during the musical writing process. You can learn more about the creation of The Generation Of Danger by watching the Under The Knife interview with Tallah.

No one knows the true chronological order for the album for certain, but this allows for fun discourse amongst fans.

As for the sound of the album, it is a wild and unapologetically heavy record that doesn’t hold back at any time. “The Generation Of Danger” is more progressive and faster-paced than “Matriphagy”, which helps the record stand out as its own thing entirely.

This approach makes The Generation Of Danger one of the best albums of 2022, and maybe even the best heavy release of the year.

The Highlights of The Generation Of Danger

To me, the highlights of “The Generation Of Danger” are the heavy songs that still have a noteworthy chorus.

With that said, I find the balanced tracks like “Shaken (not stirred)“, “The Hard Reset“, and “Stomping Grounds” to scratch the itch left by “Matriphagy”.

Additionally, the off-the-walls heavy tracks like “For The Reputation” and “Dicker’s Done” are huge treats and major highlights as well.

All-in-all, I enjoyed “The Generation Of Danger” and it deserves its high placement on this list, and I am excited for whatever Tallah does next.

#4 – Scoring The End Of The World (Motionless In White)

Genre: Metalcore, Alternative Metal, Nu Metal, Industrial Metal

Motionless In White have been one of my favorite bands – if not my favorite at certain points- for a very long time. I don’t know if I ever would have created a metal-focused website if a good friend didn’t show me “Cobwebs” back in high school.

With that said, it is safe to say that “Scoring The End Of The World” was one of my most anticipated albums of 2022. This hype was only elevated by the release of the fantastic first single, “Cyberhex“.

Typically a Motionless In White album has a pretty solid shot at being my absolute favorite album of the year. However, while the album still ranks highly on my top albums of 2022 list, I feel like it still left a lot to be desired overall. 

I was excited to hear more of the new cyberpunk influenced metalcore featured in Cyberhex on the album. However, the album didn’t end up having the cohesive sound and style that I was personally excited for.

While certain songs here and there such as “Meltdown” and the title track fit this description incredibly well, overall I wish Motionless In White dived into this sound further.

With all that said, the highs on this album are some of the highest in the band’s whole career, with many of the tracks becoming my favorite songs of the year.

So while I feel like the overall album could have been better, there are still so many amazing gems that are some of the best tracks the band has ever produced.

Highlights of Scoring The End Of The World

I mentioned earlier that Motionless In White experimented with a new cyberpunk style for Scoring The End Of The World.

This sound combines the bands industrial and nu-metal influences and fuses them with the electronic and synthwave sounds the band has experimented with before.

I find the highlights of the album to be the songs that fully commit to this cybernetic style. These songs include “Cyberhex“, “Meltdown“, “Scoring The End Of The World“, and “Sign Of Life“.

Overall the album is fantastic, and nearly every song is well-written and well-performed, making Scoring The End Of The World one of the best albums of 2022.

#3 – Tekkno (Electric Callboy)

Genre: Metalcore, Party Metal, Electronicore

“TEKKNO” was easily one of the most highly-anticipated albums of 2022. The fun-loving metalcore superstars Electric Callboy had a lot to prove following the success of their monumental hit “Hypa Hypa” hit the scene summer of 2020. 

Fortunately, the band quickly proved to the world that this success was not a fluke. Nearly every single and music video released for TEKKNO was a huge hit, with the first single “We Got The Moves” still blowing up on TikTok as recently as March of 2023.

Electric Callboy went through a lot the last few years, but they bounced back and now they have truly come into their own. TEKKNO is easily the band’s best album yet, and one of the best albums of 2022 overall.

At the very least, TEKKNO is a culturally significant record that proves that metal doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. This album made me laugh, put a smile on my face several times, and even had me headbanging track-by-track. That is a major win in my book!

Not to mention that the album had worldwide success, even going as far as going #1 in Electric Callboy’s home country of German, going gold in German, and going viral around the globe.

The only real cons with TEKKNO is that the album is too short and half of the tracks were released as singles months before the release of the album. Despite this, the album is definitely all killer, no filler.

The band sounds tight and complete in this new chapter, and I think Electric Callboy are here to stay.

Highlights of TEKKNO

Electric Callboy are at their best when they are being wild, wacky, and fun. Songs like “We Got The Moves“, “Tekkno Train“, and “Pump It” are an absolute riot, and the energy is undeniable and infectious. 

That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the more experimental tracks on the record such as the Michael Bolton and Linkin Park inspired “Neon” and the pop punk styled “Fuckboi“.

Electric Callboy even pull off a couple serious songs to switch things up with “Mindreader” and “Parasite“. Both tracks are heavier bangers that show the band aren’t just a one trick pony.

Overall TEKKNO is a fantastic album that proves that Electric Callboy aren’t only the most fun band in the scene, but also one of the best song writers out there.

#2 – Stargazer (Moodring)

Genre: Nu Gaze, Nu Core, Progressive Metal, Nu Metal, Shoegaze

“Stargazer” was easily the biggest surprise of 2022. I had never heard of Moodring until I was recommended them due to my current interest in nu-gaze bands. This is easiest the newest and youngest band to make this list.

I was shocked to discover that the band don’t only have the nu-gaze sound I was craving, but that they have already mastered it.

Stargazer is a diverse masterpiece from start-to-finish, and the album isn’t just one of the best albums of 2022, but one of the best debut albums I have ever heard.

The shoegaze moments are emotion provoking and beautiful while the nu-metal moments are heavy and nasty. Moodring (as their name appropriately suggests) masterfully switch between these moods and deliver each sound in a fantastic manner without compromising the other.

It is rare to find an album that has sufficient content for any mood, but “Stargazer” truly has something for everyone.

The Highlights of Stargazer

Honestly, it can be difficult to pick highlights from “Stargazer“, as there is a nearly perfect seven-song run from track 2 to track 8. Instead, I will break down some of the best songs from both the shoegaze and nu-metal sound from the bands
 
For the shoegaze side of the band, their tracks “Disintegrate“, “Stargazer“, “Peel“, and “Xeno (Foreign Love)” are big highlights that I still have on repeat three months into 2023.
 
When it comes to the heavier nu-metal side of the band, I find that “Constrict“, “Red Light Gossip“, and “SYNC.wav” scratch that raunchy and bouncy itch in me.
 
However, the whole album is worth checking out, as “Stargazer” is all-killer, no-filler. I am wildly impressed that Moodring were able to deliver such a consistent piece of work for their debut album.
 
This is surely an album deserving of high placement on my top 10 best albums of 2022 list, and I know Moodring are going to be one of my new favorite bands going forward.

Bad Omens have quickly become one of the biggest bands in the alternative scene, and this growth isn’t from dumb luck. This fame is all thanks to the overwhelming success of their latest record “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND“. 

The song “Just Pretend” from the album even went viral on TikTok. The song wasn’t even one of the many successful singles from the album. This is just one of the many testaments to the quality of the album. 

“THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND” was difficult for me to swallow at first, as the album didn’t end up being quite what I expected it to be. However, in hindsight the album is my favorite album of 2022. 

Despite coming out in February, the album was fresh all year and only grew on me more as time passed. Perhaps the overwhelming relevancy of the band and increasing popularity and mainstream influence had an effect on this perception, but Bad Omens just seemed larger than life as the year went on.

Due to the longevity of the record and its everlasting impact, I find “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND” to be the best album of 2022.

The pros of the record are the outstanding direction and atmosphere of the record, huge singles, and experimental album tracks. The only real con for the record is that some tracks bleed together, but despite this all of the tracks are still fantastic.

Highlights of THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND

My favorite sound from Bad Omens is when they bring the poppy influences to the forefront but still lay down some heavy moments or breakdowns. 

With that said, some of the highlights for me from “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND” are “Concrete Jungle“, “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND“, “idwt$“, the viral hit “Just Pretend” and the heavy banger “ARTIFICAL SUICIDE“.

“THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND” is one of those rare albums that only get better each listen. I believe this album will age very well and will even be one of the standout albums of the 2020’s.

Due to its groundbreaking sound, longevity and lasting influence, and huge success, “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND” secures the top stop on this top 10 best albums of 2022 list.

Periphery are back with their first album since the 2020 lockdown. The humorously titled “Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre” is also the second album the band have created under their own record label 3DOT Recordings. However, while the album has a funny title, this album is far from a joke.

Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre Track-By-Track Review

Wildfire

Periphery kick off the album with Blood Eagle’s jazzy cousin, “Wildfire“. The heavy track isn’t just the intro song, but it was also one of the two initial singles from Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre. This makes Wildfire both the first impression to the album both chronologically and in tracklist order.

PERIPHERY KICK OFF PERIPHERY V WITH A BOUT OF ENERGY AND EXPERIMENTATION

What an introduction this is too, as the appropriately titled Wildfire is an onslaught of a track. This is one of those rare lengthy tracks that doesn’t get old for a second.

The song starts off as belligerently as Blood Eagle from “Periphery IV: Hail Stan“, but the track is a lot less straight forward than the previously mentioned banger.

Wildfire switches from a heavy banger, to a jazzy jam session, to video game ambiance, and it all works flawlessly. I love the progressive nature of the track, and the genre bending is pulled off masterfully across the track. 

Another noteworthy addition to this track are the incredibly deep growls from vocalist Spencer Sotelo. He has teased these growls sparingly in previous tracks like “Flatline” and “Follow Your Ghost”, but in Wildfire these vocals are put on display loud and proud.

Wildfire Features References To The Juggernaut Albums

Wildfire – like Zagreus – even futures some references to the Juggernaut albums. As someone who loves both Alpha and Omega, this was a huge treat for me. I don’t want to spoil them here though, so listen closely and see if you can spot them for yourself.

Overall Wildfire is a fantastic track and a great way to start off the album. Additionally, the experimentation found on the track gives a great example of what to expect from Periphery V.

Atropos

Atropos is one of the most “Periphery sounding” songs imaginable. The track is a perfect fusion of familiarity and new experimentation. 

Periphery pull off utilizing experimental sounds and electronics all while achieving the riff-heavy groove Periphery fans are known to love.

Periphery Brings The Groove With Atropos

The track starts off with a heavy, rolling, riff that is seriously addicting. This is a fantastic start to a rather dynamic track. Bringing the energy right out the gates is great for grabbing attention.

However, once the first verse starts, the riff continues on to guide the melody, but it is more subtle now. The focus is now on the vocals of Spencer Sotelo. Aside from the riff, the verse is rather calm and melodic.

This vibe continues into the chorus, which sounds more like “It’s Only Smiles” than something like “Follow Your Ghost“. The chorus is merely a momentary mood shift, as Periphery kick things back into heavy territory afterwards.

Periphery Experiment With A Heavy, Electronic, Sound

Synths and electronic sounds surround a heavy groove which creates a sound that reminds me of “Remain Indoors” from “Periphery III: Select Difficulty“. That was never one of my favorite Periphery tracks, but it works really well here and I love it.

The electronic sound compliments the heavy riffs, and it adds a unique flare that makes Atropos differ well from previous singles “Wildfire” and “Zagreus“.

The second chorus plays out similar to how it did the first time, but the heavy part afterwards is much quicker than what was delivered after first verse.

Spencer sounds great here, and I appreciate how he switches up from a fury of fast screams to a deep growl as the instrumentation switches up from fast, shredding riffs to slow, rolling chugs.

Atropos Features Fantastic Melodies From Spencer Sotelo

Despite how heavy Atropos gets at times, the melodies are a huge highlight from the track. Some of the best melodies come from outside the chorus even.

This is one of those tracks that plays by no traditional rules. Atropos is a truly progressive track from an already progressive band, and Periphery are in their element here.

All-in-all, Atropos is a well-balanced track that gives every Periphery fan something to enjoy. I can see the song becoming a fan-favorite staple from the band going forward.

Wax Wings

The first non-single on the album, “Wax Wings” proves that Periphery aren’t the kind of band to fluff up a release with some filler.

In fact, Wax Wings is far from filler. I find the track to be one of the many highlights from Periphery V. It may even be the catchiest song on the album.

Wax Wings Brings Back The Periphery II Vibes

Wax Wings is faster in tempo and more melodic than the previous tracks, reminiscent of “Scarlet“, “Sentient Glow“, or “The Summer Jam” from previous releases. Considering these types of tracks are some of my absolute favorites from Periphery, this track absolutely does it for me.

I compare Wax Wings to the forementioned songs, as it isn’t an entirely soft ballad or anything, The track is a well-balanced, melodic track that still rips, features some harsh vocals, and has progressive sensibilities.

The song isn’t just melodic vocally, as the instrumentation is adjusted to compliment the soulful vocals of Spencer Sotelo. Speaking of Spencer, his vocals here are at a new peak, and his performance is fantastic here. This is saying something, as his performance is great throughout the record.

Periphery seem to be working better as a cohesive unit than ever, and this shows throughout Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre.

If you can appreciate the smooth side of Periphery, then Wax Wings may just be one of your new favorite tracks from the band.

Everything is Fine!

Ever since I saw the exclamation point in the song title, I was hoping that this song would be a frantic and heavy banger. Sure enough the djent gods have blessed us with a monster of a track with this one.

“Everything is Fine!” is a tongue-and-cheek song potentially about how NOT fine everything is. This song is everything that a ruthless heavy Periphery song should be.

Everything Is Fine! Is Exactly What A Heavy Periphery Song Should Be

The track is devastating right out the gate, with chugs that lead into the first verse. Spencer’s vocal delivery is fantastic and the production is great. Behind the frontman’s screams are an additional layer of ridiculously low growls that add a ton of weight to the heaviness of the song.

I can’t remember a time where Periphery has sounded so pissed. While the band has had slower and groovier heavy songs like “The Bad Thing” and “Follow Your Ghost“, Everything Is Fine! Is more in vein to “CHVRCH BVRNER” from “Periphery IV: Hail Stan”. The track is fast, rude, and sassy, and I love it.

However, I find that the band pull off this sound in a much more interesting and well-executed way with the current track then anything they’ve done in this style on previous releases.

The Chorus Keeps Up The Belligerent Energy Of The Track

The chorus of Everything is Fine! is energetic and fits the sound of the track really well, adding some melody without losing any momentum. I love songs that are heavy but still have a sung chorus, so I loved hearing this.

The track also features a guitar solo by Mark Holcomb and it seriously shreds. It is placed between two ridiculously heavy segments of the song with only a chorus in between. I find that this helps keep the song sounding fresh.

Lastly, the song ends on a heavy note, with Spencer letting out his deepest growls above slow and brutal instrumentation. If you love heavy Periphery, you’re going to have a field day with this one.

Silhouette

After the brutal delivery of “Everything is Fine!“, Periphery take a moment to slow things down with an electronic-driven and poppy ballad.

“Silhouette” is like the love child of the electronic and industrial “Crush” and the beautiful “Satellites” from “Periphery IV: Hail Stan”.

The track is slow and calm, with Spencer using restraint in his voice to deliver a performance that suits the mood of the track.

For the style of the song, think 80’s synthpop over a traditional poppy ballad sometimes found on a metal record. I’d love to hear more synthpop from Periphery honestly, but maybe with a little more spunk behind it.

Periphery Slow Things Down And Tackle An Orchestrated Sound

The song ends on with an orchestrated segment that acts as a palate cleanser as Periphery prepare to switch gears to another track with more rock oriented instrumentation.

Overall Silhouette is simple and consistent in sound. The band don’t pull any of their typical tricks here, so prepare for a more straightforward track here. Silhouette isn’t a bad song at all, but I also feel as if this is one of the weaker soft songs by Periphery.

The band has better emotional slow songs on past releases, so I can’t help but compare this song to those ones and I can’t help but feel that they could have done more with this one.

However, I do admire the synthpop influences, and I find the placement of the track to fit well as a palate cleanser after the belligerent “Everything is Fine!“. 

Dying Star

“Dying Star” is another softer track, but it still has some edge to it. Periphery are slowly building back up the energy they expended in “Everything is Fine!“

The track is more romantic and longing than anything else on Periphery V, and it is an interesting sound to hear at this point in the record.

Dying Star Is A Romantic Yet Yearnful Periphery Song

The song isn’t the most interesting or thought provoking track on the record, but as someone who loves some of the softer songs by Periphery, I enjoy it.

The chorus is the star of the track (no pun attended). The melody reminds me of a slow dance track or something from a Disney movie. I mean this as a compliment by the way!

The instrumentation near the three-minute mark is also a highlight of the track. The sound pops and the production is fantastic. I can’t really put it into words, so you’ll have to hear it for yourself. It just glides so well and flows in a satisfying way.

Dying Star is well positioned within the track list, as I think it builds up well from “Silhouette” and also builds into the aggressive “Zagreus“.

Zagreus

Upon announcement of “Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre”, Periphery decided to spoil their fans by releasing two tracks on the same day. The first was – the previously covered – album starter “Wildfire“, and the second was the wildly heavy “Zagreus“.

Zagreus is a different beast in itself. The track is easily one of the heaviest Periphery songs out there, without sacrificing the progressive and melodic elements the band excels so well at.

Zagreus Is A Heavy Track With A Fantastic Chorus

Despite how heavy the track is, it has a huge chorus. I always wished that previous lead single “Blood Eagle“, from “Periphery VI: Hail Stan“, had a sung chorus, and this time Periphery deliver. 

With Zagreus, the band hit that rare perfect balance between heavy and melodic that make for a perfect progressive metal banger. 

Additionally, the track is also over eight-minutes in length and it doesn’t get old or repetitive for even a moment.

Spencer Sotelo Delivers Some Ferocious Low Growls

I can’t decide what my favorite part of this track is. I am torn between the brutal deep-low screams and pig-squeal by Spencer Sotelo, or the fantastically done melodic element in the latter half of the track. 

Regardless, these two pieces complement each other well, and mix together to form the perfect Periphery track.

In the context of the record, I enjoy Zagreus even more than I enjoyed it as a single (which was a lot). The track is the perfect follow up to the mellow “Dying Star“. 

Periphery let the album dive into a calm valley before rising back up with the current track, and I think this was a great way to disperse the energy throughout the album.

Zagreus Contains Some More Juggernaut Easter Eggs

Additionally, it is worth noting that the Zagreus – like Wildfire – features references to the Juggernaut albums. 

There is even a specific lyrical reference to what I consider one of the best Periphery songs of all-time, “Omega“. No spoilers for now though, just keep your ears open for it! 

PS. Hades fans might hear something a bit familiar in Zagreus.

Overall Zagreus is one of my favorite songs from the album, and I was blown away when the track was released as a single. 

Dracul Gras

This one is for those – like me – who love long, theatrical, and heavy tracks from Periphery. My favorite tracks from Periphery are “Omega” and “Reptile“, so I have been excited to hear “Dracul Gras“.

Don’t be fooled by the title and subject matter of this track, as Dracul Gras is a one of the best tracks that Periphery V has to offer. Despite being seemingly named after – and written about – a fat re-imagining of Dracula, this song is a beast!

Dracul Gras Is Heavy, Long, Theatrical, And Progressive As Hell

This track is incredibly dynamic, and features some of the most melodic and heaviest moments from the album (similar to many of the lengthier tracks in the band’s discography). Despite its length, the track is an easy listen and the diversity of sounds within the track keeps things fresh.

After the 10 minute mark (and right when you think Periphery can’t throw anything else out there), the song transitions to a tranquil rave-like dance beat that runs until the song closes out.

Periphery Gets Weird With Dracul Gras (In A Good Way)

Periphery do a lot of weird stuff, and Dracul Gras is the perfect outlet for the band to just go wild. I think this paid off very well, as this is easily one of my favorite songs on the album.

Dracul Gras also seems to have a connection to Atropos, both lyrically and in the melody within the bridge. I haven’t made any further connections yet, but I hope to discover more about how these songs relate to each other upon further listens and inspection.

I appreciate this connection however, as both of the forementioned tracks are two of my favorites on the whole record.

Dracul Gras lives up to the hype, and may just be one of my new favorite Periphery songs.

Thanks Nobuo

The journey through Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre is coming to an end. Fortunately, Periphery have always known how to end an album on a high note. 

The band consistently crafts album closers that are perfect for closing out a record, and the placement of the song never feels like an after thought.

Periphery Close Out Periphery V With Another Epic

“Thanks Nobuo” is another long – over 10 minute – track that just screams “album closer”. 

The title of the song is a clear reference to the legendary Final Fantasy composer, Nobuo Uematsu.

Guitarist Misha Mansoor is a big fan of Nobuo’s work, and even has covered some of the composer’s tracks within his solo works.

As for the song itself, it is a dynamic and balanced track that has fun jams, harsh vocals, and great melodic vocal runs.

Thanks Nobuo Kicks Off With A Promising Jam Session

I love how the track starts off with some ambience before exploding into one of the most fun jams sessions Periphery has ever done. I actually wish we heard more of this throughout the track.

With that said, overall I find the beginning of Thanks Nobuo to be the highlight of the song. There is a lot of energy similar to “Wax Wings“, which I found to be a highlight of the record. However, the song drastically shifts in sound and style after about three minutes.

However, The Track Can Get A Bit Repetitive At Times

Unfortunately, while I do enjoy the track and it is great in its own right, I feel it doesn’t use its long run-time efficiently enough. 

The song contains a lot of repeated portions and ambiance – that while sounding great – causes the song to be a bit hard to digest outside of a full-album listen.

“Thanks Nobuo” works best when the band takes advantage of its long run-time to experiment with unconventional structures, verses, and experimental vocal segments. However, a lot of the song repeats itself.

The Song Features A Reference To A Fan-Favorite Periphery III Track

One other fun fact worth noting, is that towards the end of the song there is a glaring reference to the Periphery III track “The Way the News Goes…“, which is one of my favorite Periphery tracks.

So keep your ears open for this, as this was a nice nod to a severally underrated Periphery song.

Periphery has had better album closers in the past, and better lengthy songs as well, but all-in-all Thanks Nobuo is a great track, and a fitting close to Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre.

Final Verdict For Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre

Periphery Band

“Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre” is an album four years in the making that doesn’t only make up for lost time, but shows that perhaps taking some time to craft a worthy record can be of a huge benefit. 

The record contains some of the best Periphery songs of all-time with songs like “Wax Wings“, “Atropos“, “Wildfire“, “Zagreus“, “Dracul Gras“, and “Everything Is Fine!“, making nearly the whole album a highlight.

All of this was accomplished while crafting possibly the best cohesive record the band have ever done. While I am still partial to the Juggernaut concept albums “Alpha” and “Omega“, this is perhaps my favorite record within the “Periphery I-V Saga“.

“Periphery IV: Hail Stan” was a hard record to beat, but overall I believe that Periphery V accomplishes that overall. The band have taken everything they have learned about themselves, their brand, and their fandom and applied it to the work.

Additionally, I love how Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre contains references, riffs, and lyrics from past records (even the Juggernaut albums). It makes the record feel like a celebration of the band’s entire existence.

While I find that the softer songs don’t quite amount to some of the previous soft songs in the band’s discography, this is a small nitpick, and I find that nearly everything else on this record is done masterfully.

I can’t help but admire this album and the band for creating this. Bonus points for doing it as an independent band under their own label 3DOT Recordings.

Freedom looks good and sounds good on Periphery, and the band has achieved new heights with Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre.

To say the least, Sleep Token have kicked off the year by having what is no doubt the biggest month of their career thus far, and it has all led up to this.

After going from 280,000 monthly listeners on Spotify to over 2,000,000 in only a month, getting a shoutout from the likes of Demi Lovato, and becoming the most viral song on Spotify, Sleep Token have finally announced their highly-anticipated third chapter “Take Me Back To Eden“.

To sum up the announcement, I want to share the Take Me Back To Eden album description from Impericon. I find it to be well-written, thought-provoking, and composed in a style fitting for a Sleep Token album.

Take Me Back To Eden is one of the most exciting album cycles I have witnessed in a long-time. 

From the captivating art direction, to the “ancient guardians” corresponding to each album track, to the non-conventional single release schedule, there is a lot to take in here.

As for the sound of the album, it really speaks for itself. Sleep Token have displayed a diversity of sounds across the five revealed singles, masterfully tackling each style they tackle.

Take Me Back To Eden Is A Diverse, Genre-Bending Collection

We have the soaring Chokehold, the crushing – yet surprisingly funky – The Summoning, the dark and pop-driven Granite, the jazzy Aqua Regia, and the haunting – blackgaze-influenced – Vore. Each of these tracks show Sleep Token tackle a new element, and so far the mysterious band have excelled at each of their ventures.

Judging by the album description from Impericon, the album will be diverse in full. The album description also mentions that Take Me Back To Eden may just be Sleep Token’s heaviest effort, as well as most accessible work, all at once.

Sleep Token Boldly Dive Into The Epic

Additionally, the Take Me Back To Eden tracklist contains three tracks with impressive lengths. These tracks are “The Summoning” (06:35), “Ascensionism” (07:08) and the title track “Take Me Back To Eden” (08:20). 

As the album description reveals, Sleep Token are even boldly diving into the epic, with the title track being their lengthiest track to date.

If The Summoning gave us a taste of what to expect from Ascensionism and Take Me Back To Eden, then we are surely in for a bite of something legendary.

As for the collective runtime, the whole Take Me Back To Eden album clocks in at (63:28), which makes it over an hour long in length!

The Third – And Final – Installment Of A Trilogy

Take Me Back To Eden is reportedly the third – and final- chapter in a trilogy of Sleep Token albums. This is the conclusion of the current Sleep Token saga, but supposedly also the beginning of something new.

The Saga began with their first record “Sundowning” and continued with their sophomore effort “This Place Will Become Your Tomb“.

These albums all coalescing into one cohesive saga makes sense, as there are countless repeating themes and sounds across all of these chapters.

What comes next for Sleep Token is surely as mysterious as the band itself, but only time can tell what this entails.

While the release date for Take Me Back To Eden is further away than fans had previously hoped, there is no telling what surprises will occur leading up to the May release date.

I for one, am confident that this will continue to be an exciting and rewarding album cycle for both the band and their eager worshippers.

After nearly a month of silence following their streak of new singles, Sleep Token have returned with yet another monstrous track. 

Sleep Token first teased the track to top-fans on Facebook, and it got the cult-like fanbase up in a frenzy again. Ever since, fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of the new single, and now their prayers have been granted.

The new track “Vore” is now here and available for consumption, and along with it came the long-awaited official announcement of the new Sleep Token album “Take Me Back To Eden“.

Now let’s jump on in and discuss the new Sleep Token song “Vore“.

Sleep Token – Vore

Vore is not only the heaviest Sleep Token song to date, but it is also the most haunting. 

Within the song, Sleep Token masterfully fuse the sounds of black metal and shoegaze to create a devastating track that is hauntingly monstrous and hauntingly beautiful in the same track, but at different times.

The verses feature a dark and heavy sound full of desperate and emotional screams. This is not like anything we have ever heard from Sleep Token.

Vore sounds more like the black metal influenced “Heavy Is The Head That Falls With The Weight Of A Thousand Thoughts” from fellow progressive metal band, Loathe, than anything the band has done before.

The song features even more harsh vocals than the 2019 track “Gods“, the vocals in Vore have far more punch in them.

Speaking of Loathe, in the chorus of Vore, Vessel taps into the shoegaze sound that both bands flirt with from time-to-time.

This flirtation between black metal and shoegaze creates an unworldly and unique sound that you can’t get anywhere else.

Vore is sure to leave a strong impact in the Sleep Token discography. Not just as the heaviest Sleep Token song to date, but also one of beautiful melancholy.

It is possible that the next track released after “Vore” is “Ascensionism”, but the fun part is finding out when.

Will the band release a new song every two weeks like they did for the “Sundowning” album cycle? Or will we continue to get double drops every three weeks or so? Only time can tell, but it sure is exciting to think about!

Amiibo have been a cultural phenomenon every since the first series released back in 2014. 

Since then, several new Amiibo have been released from a wide variety of games. Some characters even have multiple collectable Amiibo variations at this point.

These figurines are popular due to their faithful design, high-quality make, and in-game functionality. There are Amiibo from nearly every Nintendo series in existence, so there are a ton of options to choice from that can make any Nintendo fan happy.

Sleep Token Hype Up Fans With Heavy, Scream-Filled ‘Vore’ Teaser

Sleep Token were busy in January and kicked off the first month of 2023 in a huge way. After dropping not one, not two, but four fantastic singles, the band went quiet for a few weeks.

After reaching new levels of hype following the release of the latest four singles, Sleep Token have at last begun to tease a fifth single from their upcoming album. 

On their Facebook page, Sleep Token released a ‘Vore” teaser for their most dedicated top-fans. The song sounds exactly how fans were hoping it would sound based-on the disturbing song title.

Let’s jump on in and discuss exactly what went down with the Sleep Token Vore teaser.

Sleep Token – ‘Vore’ Teaser

Sleep Token rewarded top-fans on Facebook by offering up a teaser for their upcoming heavy track “Vore”. 

However, due to the massive hype surrounding the band’s recent singles, the teaser quickly made its way around Discord and Twitter thanks to excited fans.

The teaser – which can be found embedded in the Tweet above – features a dark and heavy sound full of desperate and emotional screams. It sounds like we are in for a unique song unlike anything else in Sleep Token’s discography.

While the song seems to feature as many – if not more – harsh vocals than the 2019 track “Gods“, the vocals in Vore sound very different.

The track sounds more like the black metal influenced “Heavy Is The Head That Falls With The Weight Of A Thousand Thoughts” from fellow progressive metal band, Loathe, than anything the band has done before.

Sleep Token are good acquaintances and collaborators with Loathe, so it is possible this is not a coincidence.

Regardless, I look forward to hearing Vore in full when the track officially releases later this week.

Update: Vore is now officially available to consume.

Sleep Token – Take Me Back To Eden

After the release of the previous singles “Chokehold“, “The Summoning”, Granite, and Aqua Regia, I believe it is safe to say that a new full-album from Sleep Token is on the horizon.

Genius has posted a tracklist that was correct about the existence of all four released singles, as well as the upcoming track “Vore“.

The album listing on Genius also includes a tracklist that can be found below. If this is legitimate – and in the right order, it seems that the band is releasing songs in tracklist order. This is exciting, as it seems that Sleep Token have no intention of releasing chosen singles this time around.

This release cycle is similar to what Sleep Token did with their first album “Sundowning“, in which the band released one song – in tracklist order – every two weeks.

I for one can’t wait to see what comes next. Will the band continue their current trend and release two songs in a row? Only time will tell. For now, check out the alleged Take Me Back To Eden tracklist down below.

Regardless, I am excited to see what comes next for Sleep Token, and I am incredibly happy with all of the new material. It is possible that the next track released after “Vore” is “Ascensionism” if the above tracklist is correct, and if Sleep Token continue to release music in album order.

Sleep Token are not of many words, but in the one and only interview ever conducted with Vessel, the mysterious front-man specified that one should not confine themselves to one genre.

Demi Lovato and Sleep Token have a lot in common in this aspect, and it is likely that both parties appreciate each other mutually.

However, it seems that Sleep Token are reaching a whole new spectrum of the entertainment industry. While the alternative and metal scene has been all about the band this month, I don’t think anyone expected Demi Lovato to show public support for the band.

Demi Lovato shared a Spotify link to The Summoning on Instagram, which not only shows that she is a fan of the track, but also likely turned new listeners onto the band thanks to the handy link.

This is a simple – but wholesome – exchange between a major star like Demi Lovato and a newer rising band like Sleep Token.

It seems that with time more and more mainstream acts are showing appreciation for bands such as Margot Robbie, Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, and more.

I can’t help but wonder what other forms of support for the scene will come from mainstream icons in the near future.
