10 Underrated Breaking Benjamin Songs That Deserve More Love

Breaking Benjamin are one of the biggest names in modern rock. This recognition is well deserved, as each of the band’s six albums are fantastic. The band has had a monumental 28 tracks chart on the mainstream rock and hot rock charts in the United States. When a band has this many hits, it is only natural that some incredible tracks go unnoticed. Today we will be discussing 10 underrated Breaking Benjamin songs that deserve more love from the band and fans. Breaking Benjamin have a dedicated and faithful fanbase, and while none of the songs on this list will be new to any die-hard fan, some of the more casual listeners may be pleasantly surprised.

The following list of qualities regarding the track must be true to be featured on this list.

Let’s jump right in. Here are 10 underrated Breaking Benjamin songs that deserve more love.

Natural Life

“Natural Life” is criminally underrated. I have appreciated the track since I first got into the band. The track has huge “radio single” energy all while retaining the heavier vibe the “Saturate” album is known for. When compared with both “Skin” and “Medicate”, the track is a stronger track and better representation of the overall record.

I am not sure how or why “Natural Life” was overlooked, but it is a crime in itself. Even when the band plays older throwback tracks or deep cuts, it is rarely this track that is chosen. For all of these reasons, the track is easily one of the most underrated Breaking Benjamin songs.

Phase

“Phase” is even more criminally underrated than the previously mentioned “Natural Life”. The current track has the least amount of streams out of every single song off of “Saturate” (and maybe even the band’s whole discography!). I have always enjoyed “Phase” – and thanks to my persistent playing – most of my close pals have come to appreciate the song as well. This track being underrated is less of a mystery than “Natural Life”.

The song has a long tribal drum intro and the track is a bit less catchy and cohesive than other songs on the same record. However, this is exactly why I like it. The unorthodox style of the track makes it a noticeable standout on the record. Additionally, it even features growls at the end, making it one of the heavier tracks on the record. I believe “Phase” deserves more love, and hopefully some of you readers enjoy it too.

Simple Design

Okay, “Simple Design” is a weird one, and I completely understand why it remains one of the band’s least known tracks. However, at Metal Shell we love weird. I have always enjoyed the track. Even when I was younger I always found myself really appreciating the deep cuts. The main riff and general instrumentation of “Simple Design” is awesome. It even comes off sounding a bit progressive to me.

Vocalist Benjamin Burnley delivers a vocal performance completely unique and exclusive to this track. In the verses he puts on a raspy rap-singing style and it sounds heavy as hell. The chorus is soaring and on point with the rest of the “We Are Not Alone” record, but the intro and verses make “Simple Design” stand out in the crowd. The track also has a soft and beautiful bridge that makes adds to the dynamic nature of the track. I applaud Breaking Benjamin for experimenting here with some an ambitious track.

Away

I am so shocked that I get to add this track to the list. When I made note of potential tracks for this article, I left “Away” off entirely. In my mind, the track was huge. This arena ready track sounds like it would be a staple from the band, and a mainstay on their setlists. Unfortunately this isn’t the case, and the track is the third least streamed “We Are Not Alone” track on Spotify (at .

Honestly, this track was underrated on arrival. “Away” truly deserved to be a single. The track sounds huge and the chorus is powerful and full of emotion. The track definitely deserves more attention. I would love to hear the band perform this one live, especially now that they are touring the arenas perfect for this lowkey arena rock anthem.

Topless

“Topless” is an aggressive and heavy track that stands out well on “Phobia”. Being a heavy track on the band’s most accessible and mainstream record leaves Topless a bit in an awkward situation. The song is like a love letter to fans of the band’s earlier work. This is no coincidence either, as “Topless” comes from a track called “Top of the World” that Burnley wrote before Breaking Benjamin even existed. After countless re-writes and updates, the song finally made it on “Phobia”.

The track has always been one of my favorites from the acclaimed record, so I was shocked to find out that the song is the third least streamed “Phobia” tracks on Spotify (excluding the intro and outro tracks). “Topless” is full of heavy chugs and headbanging worthy instrumentals. Burnley sings in a dark and seductive manner that makes the track one of those rare sexy heavy songs. Add in a long and brutal growl at the end and you’ve got yourself one hell of a heavy Breaking Benjamin track.

I find “Topless” to be one of the most underrated Breaking Benjamin songs because of it’s unique and heavy sound and rich history going back to Burnley’s roots. This song really does deserve more attention. Maybe one day we will get to hear that final growl performed live again.

Here We Are

“Here We Are” is an accessible and catchy track that I suppose just got left in the dust. Understandably too, as “Phobia” is full of huge songs. On an album as legendary as this, it is only natural that even the underdog tracks are great. The song is soft, somber, and beautiful. The chorus adds a catchy and melodic energy fitting for any big Breaking Benjamin track. I particularly enjoy the bridge of the song. It is full of emotion and reminiscent of some of the work done on “We Are Not Alone”.

Overall I find the song underrated due to it’s unappreciated accessibility. Most Breaking Benjamin songs with a similar style or sound achieve great heights, yet here we are (pun intended). Take some time and give “Here We Are” some attention. It deserves it.

Hopeless

This one pains me to write. “Hopeless” is one of my favorite Breaking Benjamin songs of all time. I have had the track on repeat for 12 years and I still enjoy it as much as ever. The track balances heavy instrumentation and vocal delivery with heavy bouts of emotion. This is Breaking Benjamin at their most vicious and most vulnerable at the same time.

“Dear Agony” was an emotional album that came from the soul of Burnley, and “Hopeless” scream this emotion out loud. The track is heavy and relentless, and the main riff is headbang worthy. So why is the track underrated? It is literally the least streamed track on the whole album. Many songs even have two – four times the amount of streams. While it is only natural for some tracks to receive less attention on an album as well-written and full of great tracks like “Dear Agony” is, “Hopeless” definitely deserves much more love.

Into The Nothing

“Into The Nothing” was one of my favorite songs in high school. The emotional track had an opening riff that packed a punch, and verses that softly spoke to me. I was once again surprised to learn that this song was the least streamed song from “Dear Agony”. The whole record is one of my personal favorites, not just of Breaking Benjamin, but of all time.

“Into The Nothing” has it all. The instrumentation is tight and the Burnley puts on an emotional performance. The lyrical work here is really strong too, I really respect the emotional depth of the whole record. The song captures the essence of the record and delivers a defining tone. When I think of the whole record, this song comes to mind almost immediately. This makes “Into The Nothing” one of the band’s most underrated tracks.

Bury Me Alive

Besides the intro and outro tracks, “Bury Me Alive” is the least streamed track on Breaking Benjamin’s comeback record “Dark Before Dawn”. The album was a huge success and became the band’s first #1 record on the Billboard charts. What is actually surprising is how heavy the album was at times. For the most part, Burnley played it safe with “Dark Before Dawn”, but who can blame him. The record was over 90% completed before the song writer even found a new band. Despite this, the record still contains some experimental gems. “Bury Me Alive” is one of those tracks.

The heavy and dark track fits more within Korn’s discography than Breaking Benjamin’s. The track contains haunting industrial elements such as distortion in the vocals, growls, and low-tuned instrumentation. Hell the song even has a breakdown near the end. In my eyes “Bury Me Alive” is a standout track from “Dark Before Dawn”, so to find out the track is the least streamed is more than shocking. This makes the song easily one of the most underrated Breaking Benjamin songs.

Close Your Eyes

That intro riff though. “Close Your Eyes” is somehow the least streamed track on the whole “Ember” record (once again excluding the intro and outro). This underrated track is one of the most shocking yet. Not only is it it the least streamed track on its respective album, it is the least streamed track by a long shot. Most tracks on the record – aside from “Save Yourself” – have millions of more streams. This includes non-singles as well.

I don’t know how the track got so overlooked, but there must be a mistake, as “Close Your Eyes” is a great track. The main riff is strong, the chorus is powerful, and the typical Breaking Benjamin flair is all there. There isn’t anything inaccessible about the track, nor is it too experimental. I believe the track is simply overlooked, and it definitely deserves more love.

Honorable Mentions

Sugarcoat

“Sugarcoat” is surely underrated. However, it didn’t make the list because the band actually plays it live quite often. And let me tell you, it is an absolute riot. I had the privilege of hearing the track live in 2019. The pits open up from people of all ages and it is an absolute free-for-all.

I believe Breaking Benjamin purposely play songs like “Sugarcoat” – and the next entry on the list – to spice up the setlist. I definitely approve of this tactic and I admire the band for playing such heavy hitters live. Burnley doesn’t contribute vocally too much when “Sugarcoat” is played live, but fortunately bassist Aaron Bruch does one hell of a job. His scream is sounding great these days and hopefully he even gets to put them to work in the recording booth one of these days.

Believe

“Believe” is another underrated track that Breaking Benjamin fortunately haven’t forgotten about. The song is played live quite often with Bruch once again on vocals. The heavy track adds some appreciate energy to the live setlist and the mosh pits are always raging during the vicious track. “Believe” is easily one of the heaviest songs in the band’s catalogue, so it’s great to see the band keep the track alive in a live setting.

Forget It

“Forget It” is definitely underrated, but not in comparison to any track that made the list. Heck the song even appeared in an episode of “Smallville”. The track makes it to the honorable mentions list because it simply should be bigger. The band plays it live from time to time, but it is definitely not a setlist mainstay. The song is appreciated in its own right, but when a song is as great as “Forget It”, it is underrated at anything less than monumental.

Firefly

“Firefly” fortunately doesn’t make the list. This is entirely due to the fact that the song has achieved a high number of streams as of late. Seriously, it is even rivaling single “Sooner Or Later”. Growing up the track was always an under appreciated track. but it seems like fellow fans are not letting the track die.

Additionally, “Firefly” is featured in two video games, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw and WWE Day of Reckoning. While this doesn’t mean the track isn’t underrated, it does show that the song has received its fair share of attention.

Breaking Benjamin are even playing it on their current on-going tour! “Firefly” fans rejoice! In my opinion, the track may just be one of the band’s all-time bests. It is great seeing it get some love, but to me it will always be underrated.

Hollow

This track deserves an honorable mention because it simply deserves more love. “Hollow” isn’t ignored or dead by any means, but it is in the lower-half on total streams from “Dark Before Dawn”. This might not sound underrated overall, but it is in comparison to other tracks. The song at least deserved a music video, as it is one of the catchiest and strongest tracks on the whole record. It seems like “Hollow” just never really achieved the heights I believe it should have. I will always consider the track one of the highlights of the band’s #1 record.
